Governor Nigh

Former Governor George Nigh told some fantastic stories Thursday Morning as he was the guest speaker for the newly formed Edmond Satellite Rotary Club at Epworth Villa. In 1950, at the age of twenty-three, George Nigh became the youngest member of the state legislature when he was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives from Pittsburg County. In 1953 he introduced the bill that would make the song "Oklahoma!" from the Broadway musical the official state song. Nigh brought along the pen that was used to sign the proclamation that made Oklahoma! the state song. He said that immediately after the bill was signed, he drove to Lawton with the pen. Using it as a baton, he conducted the Lawton High School Band in the first ever performance of the song in Oklahoma.
